Please ignore the posting I made last night.Further research indicates that the line up reads:-Back row left to right-Ray Jones,Stan Batty,Ron Baynham,Vic Brunt,Bob Clift and Sam Godfrey.Front:-Bill Jackman,Athur Haynes,Reg Mogford, Bobby Gilfillan and Percy James. They would have lined up in 2-3-5 formation as Baynham,Godfrey,Batty;Clift,Jones,Brunt;Jackman,Haynes,Mogford,Gilfillan and James. The picture was almost certainly taken in 1950, prior to the annual Good Friday fixture against Hereford Unt. which in the immediate post war years often attracted a 10,000 plus gate.James, a Welsh amateur international, had a arrived from Luton Town a few days before to take over as player -manager from Jack Vinall. At the end of the season, James dispensed with virtually all the squad and recruited many high profile out of contract players from League clubs. My late father, who was very much involved at the time told me that this resulted in the wage bill increasing from 拢100 to over 拢250 a week-a huge sum in those days.Of the players listed,Baynham was transferred to Luton in November 1951 and went on to win three full England caps and Gilfillan went to Rochdale where he played for several years.

Mr. [Bill] Jackman was my teacher, class 6, at St. Stephen's Primary School, Worceter in 1950/1951. I have the proud memory of being knocked flat on my back when attempting to save a might shot as the reserve goalkeeper for the school team. He had yelled at me to get out of the way and let it go but I was a determined twerp with an ambition, never achieved, to become the 1st goalkeeper. I met him again some years later as a young naval rating on the Isle of Wight where his class which included my sister Sheila, on a school trip.

FURTHER TO MY EARLIER COMMENT MY FATHER IS SECOND FROM THE LEFT ON THE BACK ROW AS MENTIONED BY MR PUGH .

Paul Keasey
I CAN CONFIRM THAT THIS IS MY FATHER jOE kEASEY WHO IS STANDING SECOND FROM THE RIGHT ON THE BASCK ROW OF THE FIRST PICTURE. hE ALWAYS HAD ONLY GOOD THINGS TO SAY ABOUT HIS TIME AT wORCESTER ESPECIALLY ABOUT HOW SUPPORTIVE THE CLUB AND PLAYERS WERE TO OUR FAMILY WHEN MY SISTER DIED OF LEUKEMIA AGED 3 IN SEPT 1950 bY THE WAY ALTHOUGH I BELIEVE HE OCCASIONALLY PLAYED AS A FORWARD HE WAS NORMALLY A WING HALF OR CENTRE HALF

I saw Ron Baynham play for Luton many times - I still have his autograph. There is no doubt in my mind that's Ron in the photo. He was back at Luton in 2005 for a gathering of former Luton players. Photos show him still straight of back and legs without an ounce of fat on him. I think he must be about 76 now. One of my favourite players of all time.

I鈥檝e only recently come across this superb team picture on your website. I can fill in some of the gaps. David Exall was quite right in saying that the picture dates from 1950. To be more precise, it was taken prior to City鈥檚 home game against Kidderminster Harriers in the Worcestershire Senior Cup on Thursday, 24 August 1950. There are a couple of corrections to the players named. Standing, second from left, is actually forward Joe Keasey, a former Birmingham City player who spent two seasons at City between 1949 and 1951 before joining Harriers. Meanwhile seated second from the right is winger George Bright, not Bobby Gilfillan. Gilfillan, incidentally, came to City from Rochdale and played for City in season 1954/55. At the time the picture was taken, Percy James was just a player. He took over from Jack Vinall as player-manager in November 1950. As David says, due to a big wage bill City found themselves in dire straits financially at the end of the season, and James used his contacts to set up a 鈥淪ave the City鈥 fundraising game against an all-star team that included Stan Matthews. Some reckless tackling from City鈥檚 Gordon Mackenzie resulted in Stan being injured, and caused him to miss two England international fixtures against Argentina and Portugal later the same month.

I should have added that Percy James, who was at Worcester until replaced by Bill Jones in 1953,went on to manage Oxford City,a leading amateur club.He also played minor counties cricket with distinction for Oxfordshire. After `hanging up his boots`he became a sports coach at Oxford University and later groundsman at The Parks. He was still working there as dressing room attendant about 8 years ago when we re-kindled old memories at an Oxford U.v Worcs game.

Derek Lloyd, a former City player from the 50s called us and gave us the identities of 9 of the 11 players. He believes this photo was taken in 1948/49. Click on each individual picture to see what he said. We still need to know the identity of two players and the mascot. Can you help?
