David Brown of Festive Forestry Services Ltd in Ledbury, Herefordshire was named "Champion" of the British Christmas Tree Growers' Association (BCTGA) annual competition for best UK grower 2008.

His prize is supplying the Prime Minister with their 2008 Christmas Tree, which will stand outside the famous door throughout December.

Entries to the competition were divided into four categories:

• Pine
• Fir
• Spruce
• Wreaths

All trees had to be between 1.8m and 2.2m in height, and each entrant was allowed up to two entries in any given category.

The judges were on the look out for foliage, colour, shape and marketability.

Traditional Christmas scent

Roger Hay is the Secretary of BCTGA and he says:

"A fresh cut British grown Christmas tree not only looks fantastic but also fills your home with the traditional scent of Christmas.

"With so many different tree varieties now available from your local grower, there is a tree to suit all tastes, which leaves absolutely no excuse to buy an artificial tree."

The award was made at Stoneleigh Park, Kenilworth, Warwickshire where 21 other growers had their trees on display in hopes of winning first prize.
