Carson Wishart

The voice of migrant workers

成人快手 H&W's Carson Wishart's investigation gives migrants the chance to tell their side of the story...

My investigation into the whole migrant worker issue in Herefordshire and Worcestershire began in the summer of 2007, and was broadcast over a week of special reports on 成人快手 Hereford and Worcester's Howard Bentham at Breakfast.

It was a huge brief and, for a while, my attention was drawn to the manufacturing industry in Redditch, with concerns raised over how Eastern Europeans are subjected to a life of bonded labour in the town.

But the more I delved into the world of the foreign work force, all investigative roads led to S&A Produce at Brierley Court Farm, near Leominster.

Trust

One of my hardest tasks was to earn the migrant workers' trust, so they'd open up and tell me their experiences of what life is really like behind the polytunnels on the farm, which - along with the site at Marden - accommodates almost 4,000 workers at the height of the summer.

What I heard was a harrowing tale of how four people arrived in Herefordshire during the Spring of 2007, in the hope of a better way of life, with the chance of quadrupling their weekly income on minimum wage, had their dreams turn into a living hell.

A highly-controversial yellow card disciplinary regime, racism, dehydration, intimidation, the indignity of living in yellow metal boxes and over crowded caravans were just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the allegations made by Marcin Brzystowicz, Ivana Taneva, Georgi Georgiev and 'Andrey'.

Slavery

I'm not denying that strawberry picking is back-breaking work - but their harsh treatment, in the words of the deputy general of the Transport & General Workers' Union's deputy general Jack Dromey, can only be described as "modern-day slavery".

Almost a month before broadcast, S&A Produce was given ample opportunities to take a full part in the special reports on 成人快手 Hereford and Worcester.

Each invitation was declined and a denial issued - through a statement - that each and every allegation made by their own former employees was false.

S&A Produce insists it disciplinary and grievance procedures are agreed by the T & G, who in its words has a "very positive relationship" with them.

However, the reaction from the union's national organiser Margaret Armstrong to 成人快手 Hereford and Worcester's investigation was utter shock.

She thought the 'two yellows and you're sacked' regime was withdrawn last summer, after the unions own investigation.

This investigation offers an insight into the conditions and challenges faced by migrant workers at S&A Produce - in their own words.
