Edward Elgar outside his cottage

Upper or Lower birth for Elgar?

A local historian questions the popular view that Elgar was born in Lower Broadheath - and tells the tale of the Drovers Lane he was born by.

As a local historian I find it rather sad that most books record Elgars Birthplace as Lower Broadheath when he was in fact born in Upper Broadheath a small hamlet to the south of Broadheath Common.

Although the Museums postal address is Lower the latest Ordnance Survey shows Upper.

In later life Elgar supported the Upper Broadheath Football Club.

At the time of his birth the lane outside the cottage was a filthy Drovers Track churned up by the hooves of thousands of animals being driven from Aberystwyth to London.

The track was waymarked with Scots pine trees, still standing opposite, hence the cottage was called "The Firs".

The lane was Crows Nest Lane now changed to Crown East Lane, probably by the locals in the 1850's who wanted a better postal address.
