Empty bottles piled by a Churchdown bottle bank

Gloucestershire's got bottle

The water shortages left mountains of empty water bottles with a handful of suggestions of what to do with them. How has the recycling been going since?

The flood crisis left many households in the county with dozens, even hundreds, of empty water bottles.

Some of the 45 extra recycling sites for plastic bottles in Tewkesbury, Cheltenham and Stroud, will start disappearing this week.

So far, 50 tonnes of plastic bottles have been collected at the extra sites, but how have the council's coped?

成人快手 Gloucestershire's Chris Brierley met up with Carlos Novoth from Stroud District Council.

What happens to all the bottles being recycled? Eric Gent is from Recresco, the company which has supplied all the extra skips and is taking the bottles away.

So what's the best way to compact a potentially stubborn water bottle? Here are a few suggestions from 成人快手 Gloucestershire listeners:

  • Cut them with a bread knife then stuff the top bit into the bottom half. (Francis in the Forest)
  • Heat the bottle with a hairdryer and then use your foot. (John from Cheltenham)
  • Remove top, squeeze out the air and then replace. (John the White Van Man)
  • Pierce the bottle with a knife. (Jean from Hucclecote)

Water Bottle Festival

But could we use the bottles in a more creative way?听 Stella Buckley thinks so.

She sent us this picture and said: "Having listened to your programme regarding things to make from plastic water bottles I听decided to make a Santa.听 I used to make these years ago but with empty lemonade bottles and sold them in aid of Multiple Sclerosis."

Might a new charity fundraising revenue-stream be on the way?
The idea of a 'Water Bottle Festival' found favour with some 成人快手 Gloucestershire listeners. "How about also having a stall for garden ornaments made from water bottles?" said Gemma from Cheltenham.听

"With weather resistant labels on all (the ornaments) saying 'Gloucestershire Floods of July 2007', that way I think more people would buy them.

"It would be a timely reminder of all of the great camaraderie and devastation, which I think we must remember. Also, would be a reminder of the importance of our water supply."

Do you think a 'Water Bottle Festival' is a good idea? Perhaps you can suggest fun or effective ideas for the re-use of empty bottles? Send us your comments using the form below - the best will be featured on this website.

the artdepot, Tewkesbury
We are a group of local artists who have already put into motion our plan to build a big Ark from the water bottles. We have collected thousands already, and are still collecting now. We intend to involve the community to build and add mementoes to the sculpture, and have received backing from local businesses. So - to help by donating empty bottles, please email theartdepot@hotmail.co.uk. Many thanks!

I've kept my five litre bottles in case of this happening again. Recycling smaller bottles.

David Madden
store your empties until our water is consumable again, then fill them up and store them until next floods. you could even send them to China as they have been flooded too

Melissa Jakeway, Cub Scout Leader
the 2 litre water bottles half filled with water, along with a foot pump and cork are a favourite water rocket activity on camp, especialy as it involves getting wet.

Kevin
Fill them with tapwater while you've got the chance, and stockpile them in case this happens again!

Joel
Tie them altogether and make a raft for next time.

ME
Get into the Guinness book of records by building the tallest water bottle mountain ever! Then melt all of them to make a plastic modern art sculpture that speaks of the crisis. I love Michael's idea too! We should have an annual festival of water to commemorate the crisis, an opportunity to thank and remember and swap stories.

Sharon From Abbeydale
Fill a small one or two with water & replace the lids. The bottles can then be placed in your toilet cistern. The bottles will take up the volume of space that would normally be filled with water. It will then save the amount of water needed each time your toilet cistern re-fills.

Anon
Fill them 2/3s full wil dirty water, pressurise with a air and shoot them over the border in the next door counties....

nigel longlevens
Put a drop of boiling water in them - they'll crush up a lot smaller then

simon cheltenham
