Memorabilia 'floods' onto auction site

A bottle of water and half a slice of white bread are among the flood mementoes currently selling on Ebay.

As the situation in Gloucestershire begins to stabilise, flood-related items are already trickling onto Ebay.

Those keen to acquire a permanent reminder of the summer of 2007 can purchase a vial of flood water, or a piece of ageing white bread which, at time of writing, is selling for 拢17.01.

The half-slice was the last remaining piece of bread in the vendor's local grocery shop in Cheltenham where, on Monday July 23, anxious shoppers had stripped the shelves by 8.15am.

Ebay seller 'Clubsport911' plans to donate any monies raised by the floury fragment to local servicemen, in recognition of the efforts of the Fire & Rescue services throughout the flooding crisis.

With a few hours left on the auction, this seemingly unremarkable (and increasingly stale) object had already attracted almost 900 views.

Water

Also on Ebay is a bottle described as "containing a sample of the flood water which has devastated Gloucester during the worst recorded summer weather in history."

The vial of liquid is (at time of writing) selling for 拢2.50. and has attracted 273 views.

Visitors to the site can also purchase a postcard depicting a flooded Tewkesbury, or choose from a multitude of sandbags.

Have your say

Are flood-themed items on Ebay at bit of harmless light relief in a difficult time? Perhaps you plan to sell your own flood memorabilia, either for charitable causes or as a straightforward business transaction.

Maybe you think that these types of auctions trivialise, or may even cash in upon, a disaster which has affected the lives of thousands?

I'm the seller of the bread and can report that this story has warmed me and many hundreds of people. The fund for the half slice of bread is now well into 3 figures and I've yet to discuss with Tesco to see if they will match. Of course there are unscrupulous people out there exploiting other folks hardship, but the simple act of "trade" and people's generosity has rekindled faith in the human spirit.

if the money is going to charity ,long may it continue.

Think you will find most of this is being sold by the people of Gloucestershire themselves...light relief I would say...it has made a few people chuckle, what's wrong with that. Everyone knows the score if they really want to bid. History HAS been made in Gloucestershire and without a doubt there will be many many stories and momentos that will have to make up in some way, for the lost tourism the area has suffered. Not forgetting that people have lost everything they posess - why not sell what little they can, to in some way, compensate for a really stressful experience. Most would donate proceeds to a worthy cause, just put the question to the seller if unsure.

It's OK as a bit of fun if the money really IS going to charity. But how would you ever know for sure? Otherwise the thought of making money on the back of Gloucestershire's misfortune seems bad taste ... a bit like the stale slice of bread
