This popular ground cover plant is a smaller version of its vigorous relative, greater periwinkle, its leaves, flowers and growth rate are about two-thirds those of V. major. This restraint makes plants more suitable for smaller beds and borders, and also for planting in containers and baskets. It is equally adept at colonising poor, dry, slightly shaded conditions where the creeping and arching stems soon make an attractive carpet of bright green foliage. The 2.5cm (1in) sky-blue double flowers appear mainly in late spring, against a background of variably marked golden foliage.
