This is an unusual woodland plant with lots of character. In late spring, the upright stems hook over at the end, and from these appear clusters of long, narrow, yellow buds, which open out into narrow, rather lily-like flowers. The plants are superb under trees or among shrubs or in a woodland garden, where they associate with other choice woodland plants such as epimedium and erythronium, or in shaded, humus-rich borders with hardy ferns and Solomon's seal. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
