Previously known as 'Jacques Cartier', this is one of the loveliest of old roses, still very popular despite having been in gardens since 1868, and an outstanding classic Portland variety. Like others in this old group, it repeat flowers almost continuously, while the bushes always stay neat and manageable, so that they can be used for mass bedding or low informal hedging, and also thrive in large pots or tubs. It is very reliable in various positions and soils, and needs little special care. The fragrance is especially noticeable, and plants should be grown where this can be appreciated all summer. It's best pruned in late winter or early spring. Prune most stems lightly. To encourage young, vigorous growth, cut back a few of the oldest stems each year. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
