Traditional dwarf french beans produce flat green pods, stringless when young but later needing stringing like many runner beans. Modern tastes prefer the round pencil-pod types, especially the very fine filet beans which are short, thin and full of flavour. Modern varieties, such as the pencil-podded 'Irago', tolerate heat stress in mid-summer better than older kinds, and may also be sown early, under glass in March, for cropping in large pots indoors. Do not sow too early outside, as plants are very sensitive to low temperatures. In cold gardens, sow in pots indoors and plant out after the frosts. The Royal Horticultural Society have given it their Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
