Red apples are popular and decorative in the garden, and there are number of brightly coloured varieties with good eating qualities. 'Katy' is a Swedish variety, properly known as 'Katja'. It is vigorous and a good pollinator for other varieties. The heavy crops need thinning and feeding to make a good size. Like all apples, trees are grafted on rootstocks which affect their size and vigour, and may be trained in a number of different shapes. Pruning depends on the tree form and vigour of the rootstock, and should be checked in a handbook.
