Shrub verbena is another name for this strong smelling tropical perennial, and the tight heads of flowers closely resemble verbena in appearance. It is a popular house- and conservatory plant, either as a bushy shrub or trained as a spectacular standard, but may also be bedded outside for the summer if kept in a warm sheltered place such as a courtyard or enclosed garden. A packet of seeds will yield plants with red, orange, violet or white flowers that change colour as they age, but there are also named varieties which must be propagated from cuttings.
