There is a bewildering diversity of lettuce types, with more appearing all the time. Butterheads are soft loose-hearted varieties, crispheads or icebergs are large dense and crunchy, cos types have upright crisp leaves, and loose-leaf do not make hearts but are gathered as dense leafy heads or individual leaves are picked over a long period. 'Salad Bowl Red' is a loose-leaf type, with very pretty burgundy green crimped leaves for salads and also garnishing - it is often sold mixed with its plain green form form, 'Salad Bowl', or both kinds may be sown for variety. With its decorative appeal it is also at home in an ornamental border, as edging or scattered through other plants. To extend your salad season sow a few seeds every 7-10 days
