Winter purslane is sometimes called miner's lettuce. It has heart-shaped, slightly succulent leaves, which have a mild flavour. They are used raw in salads, along with the flowering shoots. It does self-seed rapidly and can be invasive but the seedlings are shallow rooted and easily removed. The main sowing is in late summer for an autumn to early winter harvest, but it can be sown in spring for a summer crop.
