Varieties of Hamamelis x intermedia (the hybrid itself is rarely grown) have large long-petaled flowers with a slightly crumpled appearance and in various shades of bright yellow, often flushed with red so that they look orange or coppery from a distance. Their autumn tints are often quite vivid. These lovely shrubs or small trees need plenty of space and careful positioning so that their winter and autumn displays are prominent, but their relatively plain summer appearance compensated by other plants nearby. Combine with dogwoods (Cornus) for maximum impact. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
