Marrows are popular summer squashes, with prolific crops of large solid fruits that can be used immediately or stored for several weeks if ripened fully in autumn. There are trailing kinds, which make masses of sprawling shoots, ideal as ground cover under sweetcorn, and bushy types such as 'Tiger Cross', which grow like courgettes but with larger fruits. They are lush greedy plants, yielding best on heavily manured soil with plenty of water in summer. Cut fruits while still comparatively small to stimulate further cropping, leaving the last to reach full size. The Royal Horticultural Society have given it their Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
