Round kumquats are spiny evergreen trees or shrubs that have beautiful glossy leaves, fragrant blossom in spring and edible orange fruits in summer. In the most southerly parts of the UK, it can be possible to grow this plant outdoors in a sheltered spot, but for most UK gardeners, it's best grown as a conservatory or greenhouse plant that enjoys summer on the patio. As with most citrus fruit, it needs to grow in full sun and in neutral, moderately moist soils. Water often during spring and summer, and much less so during the winter months. Feed once a week during spring to encourage the fruit to set and grow well. These can be picked and eaten straight from the tree, although their sharp, tangy taste also means they're good for using in marmalades and pickles.
