A good choice for jazzing up cottage gardens as yarrow's invasive, quick-spreading roots produce a mat of feathery, dark green leaves topped by wide, flat clusters of flowers in June and July. The species parent has produced scores of cultivars with descriptive names like 'Lilac Beauty', 'Fire King' and 'Red Velvet' which let you know what to expect. The best time to divide plants is in April. One word of warning: never plant in clay; free-draining ground is essential.
