The Kauri tree is a giant of a coniferous evergreen from the North Island of New Zealand, with a huge, spreading crown. The leathery leaves are best when young because they are bright green, with the cone lengths being smaller on males than on females. Very few nurseries sell the Kauri, though it can easily be tracked down. There's no doubt it's quite demanding, but if you can give it a sheltered site where it won't get hit by cold winds, with wall-to-wall sun and moist soil, it'll thrive.
