One of the most attractive and useful spring-flowering perennials, producing a dense ground-covering layer of foliage early, so helping smother weeds. The leaves, up to 15cm (6in) across, are roughly kidney-shaped and provide an attractive foil for the sprays of starry pale blue forget-me-not flowers that appear shortly after the leaves cover the ground. Flowering continues for 8-10 weeks in late spring and early summer, and if plants are cut down, shortly afterwards a new flush of fresh green foliage and occasional late flowers appears, rejuvenating the appearance of plants. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
