This lush, glossy green tropical plant is an excellent addition to any jungle-style garden. It has large, wide sheath-like leaves and huge 30cm-long (1ft) flowers in bright shades of orange and yellow. Despite their tropical appearance, ginger lilies are surprisingly hardy and can tolerate temperatures as low as -5oC (23oF) without any lasting damage. If a hard frost is forecast, wrap the base of the plant in horticultural fleece to protect it. These plants are simple to grow but do need well-prepared soil in order to thrive, so plant the rhizomes deeply and add as much well-rotted compost and organic matter as possible. These plants are perfect for patio containers where their fabulous, rich perfume can be enjoyed throughout July and August.
