A wild strawberry found growing in open European woodlands, it has white, late spring flowers followed by red fruit. It has to be said that named strawberry plants, like 'Aromel', are much tastier but F. vesca gives a nice touch in cottage gardens and good groundcover. All you need do is keep eating, and snip off the umbilical cords with the young plants at the end in the second half of summer to stop them spreading where they're not needed. Alternatively, let the young plants root in the soil, and then cut the cords, dig up the new plants and replant where required. 'Variegata' has leaves in green and cream.
