One of the best old-fashioned, cottage garden flowers, aquilegias produce bonnet- shaped flowers that will add an informal note to any planting scheme.'White bonnets' is a lovely variety with pale green foliage and creamy-white flowers. It blooms in early summer, and is a useful plant for bridging the gap between late spring bulbs and early summer perennials. Like all aquilegias it will self-seed prolifically, however the resulting seedlings will often differ from their parents. To keep varieties true to type, deadhead by cutting flowered stems off close to ground level shortly after flowering, to prevent self-seeding.
