Pumpkins are always fun to grow, whether you are looking for a prize-winning weight or bright orange fruits ready for Halloween. 'Hundredweight' is one of the best varieties to grow for competitions as it puts on weight easily and will become very heavy if grown singly. To achieve a really large size it is essential to thin the fruits out as they form so that plants channel all their water and energy into making one large fruit. Plants should be grown in a moisture-retentive but free-draining soil that is rich in nutrients. It is also essential to water plants regularly. Leave a spacing of at least 200cm (6.5ft) between plants to allow for growth.
