The Flight Of The Red Balloon (2008)
PGContains mild language

French drama The Flight Of The Red Balloon has been praised at film festivals, but it's likely to divide audiences less tolerant of arthouse minimalism. Juliette Binoche ad-libs well enough as the mother of a boy being followed by a red balloon, but the sparse presentation and post-modern references to the original 1956 film The Red Balloon make this seriously niche viewing. It's a bit like eavesdropping on a bus - occasionally you hear something interesting, but it's mostly mundane.

The film follows seven-year-old Simon and his new Chinese nanny, Song, as they spend time in the streets, parks and caf茅s of Paris, occasionally pausing to comment on the red balloon above. Song is also a film student, and she's making a movie featuring Simon that pays tribute to The Red Balloon. There are very elegant visual touches and a suitably Parisian soundtrack as they get to know one another and enjoy the simple pleasures of the city's green spaces.

"IMPROVISED DIALOGUE FEELS REPETITIVE"

The scenes in a cramped Paris apartment are deliberately claustrophic by contrast. Emotionally fragile mother Suzanne battles with her downstairs neighbours and her feelings for her erstwhile husband. Her problems are potentially intriguing, but the evidently improvised dialogue feels repetitive. With its focus on everyday conversations and real-time scenes, The Flight Of The Red Balloon feels like an unedited fly-on-the-wall documentary with an unusually brilliant cinematographer at the helm.

The Flight Of The Red Balloon is out in the UK on 14th March 2008.
