Contains moderate violence and one use of strong language
Nicolas Cage is a magician with a secret: he can see into the future - only two minutes into it, mind, but it's enough to guarantee plenty of bullet-dodging in this far-fetched thriller. FBI bigwig Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) reckons Cris (Cage) can stop a terrorist bomb, but he'd rather chase moist-lipped teacher and current object of his visions, Liz (Jessica Biel). Fun time-twisting gives way to tedious implausibility in this miscast, continuity-troubled blot on an already soiled record of Philip K Dick adaptations.
The fact that Cris can see into his future is actually one of the easiest parts of the plot to swallow. There's no explanation of how he can simultaneously envision what's going to happen in two minutes' time, and act on it in the present to protect himself. Surely he'd be zoned-out when he had a vision, not doing a Groundhog Day and using his knowledge of people's imminent actions to charm women or avoid the cops?
"A FEW THRILLS TO BE HAD"
Admittedly, these tricks are initially entertaining. But such skills still don't explain how a fake-tanned, hair-plugged and bad-joking Vegas showman can woo a beautiful young teacher. The slightly more likely match of Julianne Moore is wasted in her role as a clich茅-spouting Woman In Black, punished with a bomb plot that's straight out of a trashy TV show. With plenty of action on offer, there are a few thrills and spills to be had. It's just a shame that none of the laughs are intentional.
