"I don't know what to believe anymore!" wails Demi Moore near the end of Half Light. Her confusion relates to the true nature of her dashing new boyfriend Hans Matheson and spooky apparitions that make her think she's losing her marbles. But she might just as well be referring to any aspect of Craig Rosenberg's preposterous ghost yarn, which plays like an extended instalment of Tales of the Unexpected set in a remote Scottish village so cliched it's practically Brigadoon.
One year on from the tragic drowning of her seven-year-old son, acclaimed mystery novelist Rachel Carlson (Moore) is battling the mother of all writer's blocks. On the advice of her best friend Sharon (Kate Isitt), she leaves her house in Primrose Hill for a cottage in the Highlands in the hope it will re-awaken her slumbering muse. What she finds there, though, puts her own page-turners to shame: a haunted lighthouse, a doomsaying clairvoyant and menacing messages from beyond the grave...
"CREDIBILITY PROBLEMS GO UNADDRESSED"
The fact that these portents arrive via fridge magnets, a GI Joe and a child's Etch-a-Sketch is only one of the credibility problems that go unaddressed in Rosenberg's risible thriller. But that's nothing compared to Demi herself, whose off-camera history of cosmetic surgery and toy-boy beaus is freakily mirrored on screen by her scarily rigid jawline and the 13-year age-gap between her and Matheson. Throw in a plot that's basically identical to that of recent supernatural stinker and you have a Half Light only halfwits will enjoy.
