The Ketchup Effect (Hip Hip Hora) (2006)
18Contains strong sex and language

The day before her 13th birthday, Sofia (Amanda Redberg) is invited to a party with some older boys from her new high school. After she passes out drunk, however, they take some compromising photos and plaster them around the school. Abandoned by her friends and alienated from her bewildered father, she must battle to win back her shredded reputation. A sweet, spry and honest teen drama, The Ketchup Effect's certificate means its prime audience sadly won't get to see it.

Meaner than Mean Girls and braver than Buffy, The Ketchup Effect nonetheless treads many of the paths familiar from those and other American high school dramas. The pretty bitch, the bullying hunk, the overlooked friend and the misunderstanding parent all contribute towards the admittedly neat construction of Sofia's excruciating teenage pariah status. The time taken to establish her torment really pays off, and thanks to some charming scenes of friendships won and lost - and a better knob-joke than American Pie could ever dream of - you can just about forgive the slightly too-easy Hollywood ending.

"A REAL SHAME FOR ITS POTENTIAL AUDIENCE"

Excellent though she is at the centre of the picture, casting the decidedly womanly Renberg as the exploited 12 year old cheapens the nastiness of the initial act, and this proves a hard stumble to recover from. But a second age-related problem is probably far worse news for the film's success and a real shame for its potential audience: the 18 certificate that will bar most of those the film was made for from even buying a ticket.

In Swedish with English subtitles.
