Released just in time for Roman Polanski's 70th birthday and on the crest of his critical and box-office comeback with "The Pianist", this four-disc DVD boxset couldn't have been better timed, or indeed more welcome.
The three films are all available as individual DVDs or as part of this boxset, with a bonus fourth disc.
The Films You can read in-depth reviews of the three film discs by clicking on the links. On disc one is Polanski's Oscar-nominated debut, "Knife in the Water". On disc two, you'll find the disturbing descent into hell that is "Repulsion", which was Polanski's first English-language film. Finally, on disc three is the macabre and vividly shot "Cul-de-Sac".
Disc Four Disc four is given over to eight shorts made by Polanski before he embarked on his feature film career. Most are quite humorous, such as "Two Men and a Wardrobe", about two fellas who emerge from the sea carrying said wardrobe, and then proceed to create havoc around town by insisting on taking it wherever they go.
For haunting imagery, "The Lamp" is mesmerising to watch and a clear indication of a style Polanski would develop with "Repulsion" and "Cul-de-Sac". Note: if you have an aversion to mannequins or creepy dolls then it will have you scuttling for teddy.
The Roman Polanski Collection is released on DVD in the UK on 25th August 2003.
