Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek embark on a killing spree in one of those rare moments in cinema: a Terrence Malick film. His legendary shyness and reluctance to do any interviews means that this DVD lacks his input, but there's a fine new documentary to compensate.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
Picture At times this image transfer looks just a touch too grainy. The picture settles down, and colours are strong, but you get the nagging feeling this could have been done a little better.
Sound The 5.0 sound mix is quite unambitious, but does a good job of using the front speakers to separate music and dialogue into a strong clear presentation.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Absence of Malick Made by Blue Underground, this new 23-minute documentary may be the only special feature on this DVD, but it's a good one.
Sissy Spacek sums up the comments of the cast and crew when she notes: "The shooting of that film was the yardstick by which I measured all other film experiences."
For Martin Sheen the experience seemed to be even more profound, and you can find out just what an extraordinary impact he feels the movie had on his life.
As the title suggests, Terrence Malick is not interviewed for this DVD. Because of the quality of the other contributors, though, you get a strong idea of what his direction brought to the project.
Additional Extra Features The only other extra on the DVD is a trailer. It would have been nice to have more - especially an image gallery of the striking poster designs for the film, but the Absence of Malick retrospective is certainly strong.
