Mrs Doubtfire DVD (1993)

Robin Williams hams it up in the entertaining and awfully silly "Mrs Doubtfire". Fox clearly like it, as they've put together a great DVD that fans will enjoy.

Picture quality is excellent. The San Fransisco locations look great, and this disc transfer clearly has no intention of spoiling them.

The 5.0 sound mix is good, but what happened to the missing .1? Did they lose it? This isn't an action blockbuster, but the extra bass would have added weight to the excellent speaker separation that the music score gets.

Extra features? You'd better sit down because there are a few. Director Chris Columbus provides a commentary that's a virtual masterclass in camera techniques and editing. He also takes time to discuss scenes that were trimmed or deleted. No less than 28 minutes worth of these are also included on the DVD, and there are some good gags to watch out for.

The original animated opening that was severely trimmed from the movie is presented as an extra feature on the disc. Also included are the animated pencil sketches for that sequence, along with an interview with cartoon legend Chuck Jones.

If that's not enough, then for your further entertainment is footage of Williams in make-up, the application of the make-up, cast interviews, and a trailer.
