When this came out in America, critics weren't given a preview. That usually means just one thing - that it isn't worth seeing - and "The In Crowd" sticks faithfully to that rule.
When Adrien (Heuring) is discharged from a psychiatric hospital, her doctor gets her a summer job working at a beach-side country club for the obscenely wealthy. She is soon inexplicably taken under the wing of the supercilious, all-powerful, self-proclaimed queen of 'the in crowd', Brittany (Ward), although it's hard to imagine that anyone who's a member of such a club wouldn't already be part of the 'in crowd'.
Adrien slips comfortably into the life-style of the rich-and-famous (on her days off) although some of the gang are uneasy about socialising "with the help." As the friendship develops, Adrien begins to doubt tales of how Brittany's sister (Adrien's doppelganger) just disappeared a few years earlier. Then - shock, horror - she discovers that Brittany has a skeleton - or three - in her closet.
The story unfolds through a series of nonsensical and not unexpected revelations, involving hunky sportsmen, a lesbian betrayal, ball-gown and canap茅 evenings, fully-catered beach parties and of course, the obligatory cat-fight, which takes its protagonists from a forest, to a dingy basement and finally on to the edge of a flood-lit swimming pool.
Everything from the characters and the situations to the script and directing make this pointless film look like perfect Saturday early evening ITV fodder. What on earth possessed anyone to put it on the big screen?
"The In Crowd - What would you do to get in?" asks the poster. Not go to see this film, that's for sure.
"The In Crowd" is released in UK cinemas on 1st June 2001.
