Aguirre: Wrath of God DVD (1972)

The haunting visual power of "Aguirre: The Wrath of God" is quite remarkable. And it is well worth revisiting this unique film on the Region 1 DVD.

The picture quality is never less than excellent for a movie that was shot back in 1972. Key moments like the column of conquistadors in the mist-shrouded mountains, or the raging torrents that threaten to dash the expedition rafts are clear and rich with detail.

A new 5.1 sound mix has been created for this release and it is important on two levels. Firstly it increases the claustrophobic atmosphere with subtle use of the speakers. Secondly, it enhances the careful sound design that director Werner Herzog created to add further tension, by organising the birdsong around the characters physical movements.

As with the superb "Cobra Verde" DVD, Werner Herzog provides a full-length commentary. With so many boring commentaries available on DVD, Herzog's is a refreshing change. Not only does he discuss in detail the incredibly dangerous shooting conditions, but he tells some fascinating anecdotes about Klaus Kinski and the production. About Klaus, he has plenty of incredible stories, mixed with the usual respect for his towering screen presence. And on the production, he points out how disasters in the filming were accommodated into the film and often used to great benefit.

For fans, this is an essential disc to own, and for those new to Herzog and Kinski it's an excellent introduction.
