Everyone knows wrestling is fixed. So how come no one told Gordie (David Arquette) and Sean (Scott Caan), the half-witted heroes of Brian Robbins' no less gormless follow-up to his high-school football comedy "Varsity Blues"?
Though dumb and coarse in just about every respect, "Varsity Blues" did at least contain a memorable portrait of sneering evil from Jon Voight. And thanks to Oliver Platt's scene-stealing turn as a wrestling champion gone to seed and Martin Landau's cameo as a veteran trainer, "Ready To Rumble" is not without its high points.
For the most part, though, it's another depressing example of Hollywood's tendency to rely on oafish slapstick and lavatorial humour in place of genuine wit or imagination. One comic set-piece is a collision between a sewage truck and a lorry full of toilet paper - a depressingly apt symbol for the movie as a whole.
In what is basically a feature-length commercial for World Championship Wrestling, a largely discredited American outfit whose 'superstars' include such two-dimensional creations as Sid Vicious, Diamond Dallas Page and Bam Bam Bigelow, sewage workers Gordie and Sean join forces with fallen idol Jimmy King (Platt) after he loses his title in a rigged wrestling bout.
To do this, they must outwit crooked promoter Titus Sinclair (Joe Pantoliano) and teach King enough moves to survive a triple-cage death match in Las Vegas.
Surprisingly violent for a comedy, "Ready to Rumble" has its moments, but ultimately feels just as bogus as the Lycra-clad charlatans it lionises.
