Natasha Lyonne
But I'm A Cheerleader
Interviewed by James Mottram

Who do you play in "But I'm a Cheerleader"?
I play Megan, a competition cheerleader from a small town. One day she comes home, and she thinks she's going to cheerleading camp, but instead there's an intervention and Mike, played by RuPaul, is there to take her away to homosexual rehab, because she eats tofu and listens to Melissa Etheridge. When she gets there, she meets a girl called Graham, played by Clea DuVall, and falls in love with her.

Who do you think the film is for?
I hope young girls see "But I'm a Cheerleader" because it's really just a love story. It's not about cheerleading.

What sort of preparation did you do?
When we got in training for the film, there were cheerleaders coaching us and this one girl was like "I'm Suzy! I'm from San Diego! I just came from cheerleading practice - best cheerleading practice in the world!" So during shooting, I'd stand there with this giant smile on my face - my cheeks were, like, bleeding - and after every shot, I'd just say, "Best shot in the world!" and jump around.

What was the best thing about working on the film?
Working with Clea. She is one of my closest friends - we share the same agent. We're writing a script right now, which seems really hard and obvious, given that we're both young actors. I think the ultimate goal is to take the money and run, retire, and then make your own movies - just the things you want to do.
