Introducing Edge of Sound: Paris the Crazy Years, this illustrated talk by Nigel Simeone explores the heady combination of music, dance, art, literature and fashion that inspired such an explosion of creativity in Paris during the 1920s.

Nigel Simeone is the author of Paris – A Musical Gazetteer.

In 1917 Diaghilev's Ballets Russes gave the first performance of Satie's brilliantly inventive Parade, with designs by Picasso and a scenario by Cocteau.

It was Cocteau who also wrote the scenario for Le Boeuf sur le Toit (The Ox on the Roof) in 1920, with music by Milhaud and designs by Dufy.

As one of 'Les Six', Milhaud worked with Cocteau again on Les Mariés de la Tour Eiffel (The Wedding Party on the Eiffel Tower) staged by the Ballets suédois (Swedish ballet) with music by five members of 'Les Six'.

Paris at its liveliest and most innovative was fast becoming a magnet for brilliant talents from overseas, including Cole Porter, who arrived in 1919. Though written in Paris and orchestrated by the French composer Koechlin, his ballet Within the Quota is the first ballet on an American subject set by an American composer.
