Closing the Radio 1 stage on Saturday night makes it T number four for Guy Garvey et al.
The band formed in 1992 in Manchester. Garvey’s thoughtful lyrics combine with powerfully emotional tunes, great hooks and clever instrumentation to create anthemic music that goes down very well with a festival crowd.
Album titles are always interesting: the most recent, The Take Off and Landing of Everything, went straight in at number one in the UK album charts, a first for the band.
Garvey penned part of it in New York where he temporarily relocated to work on lyrics for a forthcoming stage production of King Kong the musical. The cast on the record also includes the Hallé Orchestra (‘Manchester’s oldest band’ as Guy affectionately calls them) and long term friend Jimi Goodwin of Doves adding backing vocals on the single ‘New York Morning’.
