In Nielsen鈥檚 Second Symphony, The Four Temperaments, we feel the full force of the mature composer鈥檚 vision. Taking the Medieval idea of the 鈥榝our humours鈥� of the human constitution, Nielsen constructs a drama of vivid contrasts, from impetuous violence of the first 鈥榗holeric鈥� movement to the irresistible dancing breeziness of the 鈥榮anguine鈥� finale. In between comes a 鈥榤elancholy鈥� Andante of majestic expressive power, worthy of Rachmaninov, whose consoling cantata Spring opens the concert, performed with baritone Igor Golovatenko and 成人快手 Symphony Chorus. The male chorus joins American master-pianist Garrick Ohlsson for Busoni鈥檚 extraordinary and gargantuan concerto, once called 鈥榓 hymn to immoderation鈥�.
