The perfect family show from the award winning ABC of Opera

The Academy of Barmy Composers

Dame Joanna Lumley
‘The Academy of Barmy Composers is lavish and quite irresistible. Fabulous in every way.’

A fun interactive show for all the family. A Time travelling, Talking Trunk had been built nearly 500 years ago by the Principal of the Academy of Barmy composers - Professor Peri. Trunk's job was to store all the beautiful manuscripts that had ever been written. The two of them had travelled through time meeting all the great creators of music: Perfect Purcell, Windy Wolfie, Tortellini Rossini, Bilious Beethoven, Fantastica Francesca, Doc Blow, Luckless Lully… and 1000’s more. These batty but brilliant composers enchant us with their music and historical, hysterical tales. However, all the world’s marvelous music is threatened with being wiped out just like the Academy of Barmy Composers who created it. Cruel Crowell is plotting to destroy music for the future. Can the audience help us save The Academy, their stories, and their music for the future?

Accompanied by the orchestra of the Welsh National Opera, narrated by Wynne Evans, 6 international opera singers as well as enhanced by magic and projections, this exciting show will instil an infectious desire for children and their families to learn, and discover more about the power of classical music.  Nurturing their imagination, providing insight into what shapes the stories of opera, its cultural significance and place in history, The ABC of Opera, with this unique new approach, brings accessibility to an art form that is too often seen as elitist and with the message that Any Body Can.

Barbican Centre, and Guildhall School of Music & Drama
‘ABC has a compelling way of presenting an extraordinary art form that is often seen as impenetrable. Their strength is engendering a love of music in children through participation and imaginative storytelling.’

Alistair McGowan
“Opera is given the ‘Horrible Histories’ treatment and comes off very well. Can I go to the Academy please?’
South Wales Evening Post

The Times
‘The Academy of Barmy Composers stage spectacular is a funny rip-roaring factual’ish fantasy adventure for all the family with an inspirational soundtrack.’

Terry Deary – Author Horrible Histories
“The pace and the characterizations are top class.’

Performance duration 1hr 10 mins
