Concert Information
Shostakovich called his Fifth Symphony 鈥渁 Soviet artist鈥檚 response to just criticism鈥 鈥 but then, he didn鈥檛 have much of a choice. And every note screams out a different, much darker story.
From its tempestuous opening to its final, blazing chords, this is music that demands to be heard: angry, heartfelt, and utterly compelling. John Storg氓rds knows exactly how to play the long game; expect a roof-raising finish to a concert that begins with Leonard Bernstein鈥檚 practically-perfect little zinger of a comedy overture, and features a rare chance to hear the sparkling, supercharged piano concerto by Benjamin Britten; Bernstein and Shostakovich鈥檚 mutual friend.
It鈥檚 like a blast of spring air 鈥 and as soloist, Lancashire鈥檚 own Kathryn Stott will throw the windows wide open.
