ONE NIGHT OF SHAKESPEARE - THE PLAYS
A Winter's Tale
One of Shakespeare's final plays, The Winter's Tale mixes romance, jealousy and tragedy.
Whilst Leontes, the King of Sicilia, is entertaining his old friend Polixenes, the King of Bohemia, he mistakenly thinks his wife Hermione has cheated with Polixenes.
Overcome with jealousy Leontes calls for Polixenes to be sent to jail but the King of Bohemia is warned of the plan by Camillo, the man who has been sent to capture him and the pair escape.
The pregnant Hermione, pleading her innocence, is thrown in jail and gives birth to a girl that is disowned by Leontes. Leontes commands that the baby be abandoned in the wild.
Traumatised by his mother's mistreatment, the son of Leontes, Mamillius dies, then Hermione too is carried out of the jail dead. The deaths are enough to make Leontes realise what his jealousy has cost him and he goes into solitary.
Meanwhile the baby girl Perdita is discovered by a shepherd and is raised as his own daughter. Sixteen years later Polixenes's son Florizel falls in love with Perdita and the couple escape to Sicilia where they come before Leontes. As the true identity of the young bride is revealed the Kings are reunited and are delighted at the upcoming wedding.
Leontes, however, can't get rid of the sad memory of his wife Hermione. Seeing his distress, Pauline takes Leontes to see a statue of the Queen, which is actually Hermione herself - she has been living in hiding since her supposed death. The end of the play sees Leontes back together with his wife, daughter and best friend.
