Organisers of the Gillingham and Shaftesbury Agricultural Show insisted that the show would go on this summer, despite heightened fears of Foot and Mouth Disease.

This year's event didn't have the usual cows and sheep on show but still managed to attract hundreds of visitors to the Motcombe showground.

Even the rain didn't succeed in dampening spirits.

"The weather was a bit of a turn-off but we had tickets so we thought we'd come - and it's been a great day!" said Nicky Alice.

Restrictions on moving cattle meant that this year's event focused on heavy horses, dogs and smaller animals like rabbits and guinea pigs.

There were also dozens of stalls selling locally produced cheese, meats and cakes as well as beer tents and live music.

"I've been playing in the mud!" said 10 year old Zacharia. "But the animals are a big thing and it's a shame they're not here."

"There are so many farmers who have come here for a good day out to enjoy themselves, it's just a shame there aren't any animals for them to see," commented Organiser Sam Braddick.

The Ellingham & Ringwood Agricultural Show was cancelled earlier this summer due to concerns over Foot and Mouth Disease.
