A fine art student studying at a Devon university has decided on a rather unusual venue to display her work. Fereshte Moosavi is going to show her work听 - which focuses on Plymouth's wartime memories 鈥撎 in an old air raid shelter on the city's university campus. Fereshte, 28,听 really wants people to get in touch with her to share their memories to form part of her project. The shelter was used by local schoolchildren The 28-year-old is going to exhibit the images she creates inspired by the recollections of local people in the World War II shelter behind the Scott Building on the campus. The images will be printed onto perspex and then attached to the walls of the shelter. Fereshte 鈥 who has personal experiences of wartime shelters from her childhood during the Iran-Iraq war - is decorating the shelter in readiness for the project.
The shelter is just one of a number used in Plymouth to protect civilians from the many bombing raids the city suffered during the war and was used by pupils from a nearby school. The city was targeted by German bombing raids because of its importance as a major naval port and much of the pre-war city was destroyed. In the spring of 1941 there were 31 air raids over Plymouth and it's estimated more than 250,000 explosive devices were dropped. Fereshte - who is studying for a Masters Degree in Fine Art - said her own experiences as a child inspired her to track down air raid shelters in the city and then revive the wartime memories they provoked in people. The city was targeted by German bombing raids 鈥淭hese shelters protected thousands of people from air raids, but now the war has long since ended they have been forgotten and they no longer have a real function,鈥 said Fereshte. 鈥淚 wanted to give this particular shelter a new function and more importantly, make sure that the memories of those who used them were not forgotten. This project will help ensure that they are not.鈥 Fereshte plans to interview as many people as she can for her project which will go on display as part of the final degree show being staged from 22 to 27 September and anyone who wants to share their memories can email her at fereshtemoosavi@yahoo.com. As well as using the air raid shelter to display the work, other pieces will also be on show in the Roland Levinsky Building. last updated: 25/07/2008 at 11:56 You are in: Devon > People > Your stories > Artist has designs on your wartime memories |
