An imprint of the late show stamp

Considering we're both from the South West, you'd be forgiven for thinking we knew all there was to know about Letterboxing on Dartmoor. Sadly, neither of us had much idea - other than 'someone hides a box under a stone and someone else tries to find it!'

Steph and Roger (or the 'Woodstock Wanderers' as they're known by fellow letterboxers) from Throwleigh and Andy and Sal from London ('Mr Cock and Mrs Chicken'), decided we needed a bit of a lesson.

And to make it even more fun, Andy and Sal made us our own stamp and put together a John Govier's Late Night Radio Show letterbox.

Our 'little cockney sparrows' Andy and Sal found our show by accident back in the summer when they were on one of their regular trips from The City to the moors.

They were camping in their tent and couldn't find a strong signal for their regular national radio station, when they stumbled upon John Govier's Late Night Radio Show instead.

They liked what they heard (well who wouldn't?) and 'jumped ship'. Now they listen to us every night via the Internet.

One evening, after phoning in, they ended up on air and told us all about their fresh-air hobby. That's when the the idea of making and hiding our very own letterbox was hatched.

And so back to that cold, crisp day on Dartmoor:

Kev had invited letterboxing gurus Roger and Steph to come along and arranged for the six of us to meet up.

We headed to one of my favourite locations on the moor and split into two teams.

Roger and Steph took Kev to try and find a letterbox from a set of clues, whilst Andy, Sal and I went to find a suitable location to hide our box.

We both succeeded in our task. Kev just needs to find another 99 boxes before he can become a member of The Letterbox 100 Club!

Now it's up to you to start your own hunt for our box.

It's a great way to discover more about the countryside, but remember to follow some common sense rules like wearing suitable clothing and telling someone before you head out - the conditions on Dartmoor can change without warning.

Don't forget to take a 1:25,000 scale map (Ordnance Survey OL28) and a compass.
