People living in Plymouth are being offered the chance to find out if they live close to where a World War II bomb fell.

The city was targeted by German bombing raids because of its importance as a major naval port and much of the pre-war city was destroyed.

In the spring of 1941 there were 31 air raids over Plymouth and it's estimated more than 250,000 explosive devices were dropped.

Now for the first time people in the city can buy a map which details the locations where the bombs fell.

"The areas most heavily hit were around Devonport Dockyard to disrupt wartime shipping," explained Ian Criddle of Plymouth City Library.

"More fell around Millbay Docks and Sutton Harbour and also in the city centre and east end."

Plymouth City Council, which owns the copyright to the map, has decided to make extra copies available after numerous requests for a chart to take away.

The map, which is officially entitled 'Where the Bombs Fell', was compiled shortly after the end of the war. It gives a street by street account of where every bomb fell.

It features in a number of books including HP Twyford's 'It Came to Our Door', Arthur Camp's 'Blitz Over Plymouth' and Gerald Wasley's 'Plymouth, a Shattered City'.

Copies of the map are going on sale at the city's libraries.
