All At Stake named top band

Chesterfield's annual Battle of the Bands competition saw pop-punkers take first place. Organiser Akira Pauk rounds up a night of intense competition...

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Derbyshire's prestigious event - Band of the Year - was held once again at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield.

Two intense heats with a variety of music led up to a tough final full of diverse acts.

Population Lost finished second

The sell-out show created a fantastic atmosphere for all of the acts that were battling it out for top place.

With Ichabod, the solo blues act that pulled in a major audience, kept everyone entertained with his boyish charms and his talented guitar-playing and lyrics.

Alfreton-based 'The Dooberies' turned the Wheel into a barn with their folk rock.

Complete with harmonicas, bongos and some funky tunes the band captured the audience and kept them interested.

Self-proclaimed crooked town punks 'Population Lost' added speed, ska and social issues to the heated final, cramming as many of their well-known tracks into the 20-minute set.

Kworyl took third place

Rap artist 'Kworyl' stepped up to the difficult slot of playing to an audience where Hip Hop fans were in the minority.

But with much lyrical banter in-between, Kworyl's musical poetry shined hard in tracks like Footprints and he helped convince the initially-sceptical crowd there was much to enjoy in the Hip Hop genre.

Fun-loving pop-punkers 'All At Stake' took over the stage for a whole different blast on the music.

With synths, catchy choruses and you-dance we-dance energy, they involved the crowd and left them singing along even when they'd finished.

Metal monsters My Demise created the best in pits with their extreme guitar bleeding and ear-piercing vocals. It was a set full of stamina, spit and enough sweat to drown the crowd.

After a hard decision, Kworyl took third place, Population Lost stood up second and All At Stake claimed the mass of goodies and title, Band of the Year 2007.
