Once the series had been comissioned, Geoffrey Perkins took over from Simon Brett as producer. At the time Geoffrey was a fledgling radio LE producer - these days he's the 成人快手 Head of Comedy.
He had the difficult task of getting scripts from Douglas Adams, who worked right up to, and often beyond, deadlines.
The fifth and sixth episodes of the first series were co-written with John Lloyd, when the demands of getting a script written at the same time as writing for Doctor Who (and the many baths and bovril sandwiches this involved) got too pressing.
Two of the cast coincidentally met at another interview. Their conversation sums up the experience of recording Hitchhiker's:
Roy Hudd:
'I've just done this radio show where I never met any of the other actors and I didn't understand what any of it was about'
Stephen Moore:
'Ah, yes, I expect that's the thing I'm in.'
The series was first broadcast with no publicity at all. However, it soon picked up a loyal and enthusiastic following.
