Fiona Rae submitted the image to The Big Picture project after snapping the couple at a workshop in Stratford-upon-Avon.

This photo has been selected out of the 110,000 images sent in to The Big Picture and has been shortlisted - along with seven others - to possibly become the image used as the mosaic. The chosen image won't be known until the grand unveiling outside Thinktank at Birmingham's Millennium Point on Saturday, 23 August.

When talking about the image, Fiona said: "I took this picture in the afternoon of the Big Picture workshop at the leisure centre in Stratford.

"I bought my first digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera in February and I would say it鈥檚 changed my life. I take my camera everywhere and have taken thousands of pictures 鈥� flowers at first and then I found that I like taking pictures of people more.

"Three generations of an Indian family were walking along the banks of the river Avon on this particular afternoon, I chatted to them and we took pictures of each other. The couple in the photo were grandparents visiting their family here from India.鈥�

Size of three tennis courts

The final photo mosaic will be the size of three tennis courts and will include every image that has been submitted to the project.

Helen Marshall, who will be overseeing the construction of the mosaic and was involved in the shorlisting of images, said about Fiona's photo:

"Beautiful faces in the photo, but not as we might expect. It is not taken in India. These two are visiting their younger family here from India. There must be so many important and unique stories about the settlement of Asian families in the West Midlands.鈥�
