City centre set for billion pound transformation

Coventry city centre is to be transformed - a move, which could double the amount of shops and create a new and exciting billion pound centre for its visitors.

The plans would see much of the city centre demolished and rebuilt.

Leader of Coventry City Council Councillor Ken Taylor said: "This is the beginning of one of the most exciting transformations our city has seen in 50-years - this is what people have been asking for over the past decade, and the city is finally in a position to deliver the change."

The Council are working with key landowners and retail developers in the centre of Coventry and are planning to appoint international architects Jerde to help redesign the layout.

Leader of Coventry City Council, Councillor Ken Taylor

Jerde - a firm which has its headquarters in Los Angeles and a European base in Amsterdam - are the favourites to win the tender for designing the new Coventry city centre following strong competition from other architecture firms. Jerde work in towns and cities across the world to develop innovative shopping areas and city centres.

The new city centre will be based on the ideas and input of local people and should link separate shopping areas together to encourage local and individual retailers.

Cllr Taylor added: "This is the beginning of one of the most exciting transformations our city has seen in 50-years - this is what people have been asking for over the past decade, and the city is finally in a position to deliver the change.

"We're not known as the Phoenix city for nothing; over many years we've transformed ourselves to keep up with local and world change, fighting back after the recession to attract new investment and jobs from around the world.

"....What we're clear about is that we don't want this to be another clone shopping centre. Coventry has something special to offer people, and our city centre must reflect this - this is why we've asked Jerde to work with us to develop the masterplan; they will give us something unique , and are passionate about reflecting the qualities of the places they work."

Members of Coventry City Council's Cabinet are set to approve the appointment of Jerde to develop a masterplan of the city centre at their meeting on Tuesday, 15 January.

I spent 3 years in Coventry at University in the late 1990's. The place was falling apart then. It has little to no green areas at present, the majority of the city centre was uncomfortable to walk through during the day, let alone night (grafitti, vandalism, subways). It is 90% concrete and depressing to look at. I have been back since and not much has changed.

What's the point in doubling the amount of shops in the city centre, the shops we have now can't be filled and it appears more are leaving every day. Soon it will be a ghost town. Perhaps its a tastic of the city council to charge exorbitant rents so all the empty shops can be bulldosed,to enable them to start again.

I was born and raised in Coventry until I moved to Scotland 10 years ago. I used to go around telling all my scottish friends to visit Coventry as I was proud to come from there. But not anymore! The place looks ridiculous - some sort of testing ground which looks so totally out of place - nothing matches. And I'm making these comments from video's and pictures I have seen. I haven't been back to Coventry for a few years now, I have no intention of coming back and will no longer be recommending my friends to do so!

I am currently at uni in bham, when i come back i won;t recognise Coventry, they should restore the history nevermind more shops.

I agree that the cohesive post war design of Broadgate and the precincts was fine. It had open views, greenery, fountans and art. Then it was all destroyed, first by the massive ramp in the upper precinct, which blocked off the view between Broadgate and the precincts and then by the unbelievable addition of the utter monstrosity of Cathedral Lanes & tent. I don't live in Coventry anymore but I really hope that this latest redevelopment DEMOLISHES CATHEDRAL LANES AND THE TENT and maybe even just goes back to the green and pleasant Broadgate of circa 1975 with it's tall trees and open aspect to the Cathedrals. Hopefully the developers will look at the excellent website that shows pictures of Coventry 'Then & Now' so they get a feel for the history of Coventry and avoid making the same mistakes made in the 80's, 90's & 00's!

Anyone with any knowledge of Coventry's history, or in fact cares should fight to save the work that was done after the war. This is our city!I鈥檝e read that Coventry鈥檚 people want this change and that Coventry is 'out dated' what a load of rubbish. Do we say that about Victorian, Tudor or even Art Deco styled architecture!?!? Use some sense, history proves that in time we will appreciate all forms of architecture. So, in 20-30 years what will we have to look back on? Sadly I fear it will be the buildings from our American friends Jerde, and not the buildings WE built after we were so badly hurt after the blitz. If they look tired...clean and repair them, if they鈥檙e empty, fill them, restoration is the way forward for this city. A master plan was laid out by messrs Gibson and Ford, pay attention to it because its what our city is built from. The buildings that have a negative affect on the city are (to name a few) West Orchards, Cathedral Lanes, Sky Dome, Ikea and Pool Meadow...see below for agreement. ...its not the buildings we created after the war, which I expect will suffer from the massive shopping centre Jerde will give us, which, as current fabrication proves will have the anticipated life span of a maximum of 25 years. To put it in a simpler context. Look at West Orchards, it opened in 1991, look at it 17 years on. It simply will not stand the test of time and will undoubtedly be removed in Jerde鈥檚 plans. Now compare it to the shops in the precinct, solid well built buildings which could last and last.I wish I had longer to write my feelings, sorry for my rambling!

If Warsaw can recreate its central square after the war, why can't Coventry? A lot of people have said how attractive Broadgate used to be, so why can't the proposed new development be zoned with some of it ultra modern and some a recreation of the wonderful architecture before the war? The appointed architects sound the kind of organisation who have the vision to make this kind of multi-approach link together and work.

Sylvia Clarke
The city centre does not need high rise blocks. Ikea and the new Belgrade Plaza hotel are blots on the skyline. Keep the profile low with some open spaces.

Anne
Cathedral Lanes and the canopy need to be removed They block the flow from Precinct to Cathedral quarter and Phoenix developement. We have a lot to be proud of historically (see Stanley Jurczak) and the the new design should ensure this is played up so that we do not become just another shopping centre. Its our history that will draw in visitors and uplift the spirits of local people alongside a visionary and evironmentally sensitive/progressive new build. Environmental sustainability should feature strongly and provide another incentive for visitors to come here Giving visiblity to the historic and iconic and providing an environmentally responsible new development might just put us back on the list of places worth visiting.

What an absolute mess the city centre is becoming. It seems that because we were bombed and alot of the city centre had to be rebuilt we have fast become a testing ground for new and radical designs and bulding ideas. I hear some cities in Poland who lost buildings in the war tried as much as possible to reconstruct the cities back to how they were previous creating 'old town touristy areas"!! Not always possible I know but now Coventry is just a mixed up mess! Who ever was in charge or had the idea for the position of cathedral lanes and that hideous tent thing needs to look at all the old photos of how nice Broadgate was in the past even after the war and think Hmm this will attract loads more tourists. Not!!! The new ikea is a good idea but it just seems crammed in and too close to the skydome! It also looks boring and grey. Oh and guess what, the new theatre. A big grey box! Wow!! Spon street on a sat night looks like one big taxi rank and take away with the amount of rubbish & goings on etc and the vile burges area is just beyond help. I agree with janet's comments below we need more green open spaces and to open up parts of the city centre, (constricted in part by the ring road) a NEW Broadgate (european style) square more like before, to show off the Lady Godiva statue rather than cover her up, with trees & flowers that opens up the heart of the city centre to both shoppers and tourists alike. Some areas like the new glass roofed lower precienct and some of the motor museum area look good but already vandalised. It all needs connecting together somehow. I just hope Jerde's designers and architects look at all the old historic photos of how buildings looked before they design something that could make things look much worse!!

Stanley Jurczak
The City Centre needs:-1.More Independent small shops selling quality items.2.A Quality Department Store.3.More Hotels4.More green spaces to sit and relax.5.New visually impressive Modern state of the art Bus Station (not Pool Meadow)6.A dedicated Coach Station7.More through traffic especially at night8.More Police9.TreesLess:-parking restrictions, especially at nightWhat I like about Coventry City Centre: The GOOD-St.Johns Church & Bonds Hospital.Herbert Art Gallery.St.Marys Hall and the Cthedral Quarter.Drapers Hall and BrownsLady Godiva Statue and mechanical Clock (Tent is a monstrosity).Warwick Row,Quadrant.Greyfriars Spire and InspireCov Market (though needs sympathetic refurbishment).SOME of Spon St.SOME of Corporation St.Trinity Church.Old Fire Station.Town Wall Tavern.Swanswell Gate.Fords Hospital. Some of Priory Place and Millenium Place.Glass Bridge.Eden and Gatehouse.Belgrade Plaza Car Park.SOME of Greyfriars Green.Round Cafe (unusual, unique and quirky).Old Grammer School(though it's in a bad way and needs major refurb).Friars House and Axa Building and Ramada Hotel. The BAD and The UGLY -Area around Bishop St. Tower St.Silver St.Hales St.Pool Meadow and Faifax St.Watch Close and buildings facing the Ring Road. Some of Corporation St.IKEA.New Union St. Car Park.Spire House.Cox St.Litten Tree buildingHertford St.(most of) and some of Bull Yard.Market Way and entrance to Market.Area surrounding the Market.Escalator in Precinct.Smithford Way.The Jewellers in Precinct.Cathedral Lanes. The Canopy.Shelton Square.parts of Burges.Ironmonger Row and Cross Cheaping.

I think that the gentleman that spoke on the radio the other evening was correct - we should have a hospital in the centre of the city then you get people travelling into the centre. We should get rid of Catherdral Lanes and open up the area linking the Catherdral with the city centre. The new Ikea building is ugle and does not help improve the image of the city. We should be able to see the good things we already have. It is hard to find anywhere where you can see the 3 spires. We need more open spaces, more grass, trees & flowers, more cafes that are open in the evening. As well as a good selection of small local shops selling locally produce or at least made in the UK products.

David
One of the ways to link the various areas of the City would be to use the waterways which our City planners put in pipes and hid. San Antonio shows the way for a pretty ordinary stream to become a City Centre attraction. Pool Meadow? Where is the pool? The Burgess, where is the river? Coventry University could have its lakes as does Warwick. Why is not the square around the old Cathedral not the Cathedral Close with peace for the tired? Why is the monastery hidden behind an elevated concrete ring road and itself not running down to the river there? There has been a shortage of knowledge of history and appreciation of ambiance. Lets hope..........

David Smith
Coventry city centre is an absolute mess whoever is responsible for approving past city centre developements should be deported. Whats going to be different this time and who ultimately will foot the bill?

S Reeves
They will do what they want any way so why bother asking the public, as the woun't take any notice of commencence idears?

gail colledge
coventry city has such a lot of history to be proud of. It would be nice to see it greener in the center, where lady godiva sits, she should be our main focal point, the whole area should be softer and more traditional,we should exploit all of our historic artifacts, and make coventry a tourist experience. go softly on the concrete, thats already been seen to be grossly ugly.

David
Whats all this nonsesnse with people saying the money should be spent on pot-holes? Most of this money is PRIVATE money not council. Private companys are not going to spend money on the roads are they

Terry Viner
I have listened to the interviews and my main concern is if Coventry City Council have any say on the redevelopment then you may as well forget rebuilding Coventry.I don鈥檛 mean this to sound dreadful but they have done more damage legally to Coventry City Centre than what happened in the 1940 to 44 war.Its what鈥檚 known as legalised vandalism.Terry Viner

Colin Bromfield
I would like to see the buses and all traffi c taken away from Broadgate and the Citv Centre by creating an underground bus centre under Broadgate rather than the remote Pool Meadow a lot of it is already excavated for underground deliveries

U.Kara
The road's in Coventry are terrible! Sort them out first!

mark
what are u going to do with more concrete

Simon
I'm excited to see potential plans for what they want to do but have to agree with other people that it will probably turn out to be a massive construction project, stretching out for years and ending up an aesthetic and economic disaster

rob rankin
No NO NO I now live in skegness but born and bread in foleshill when i go back i like to see memories of where i grew up some the special places in the city centre where i and my mates back in the 60s had Don/t Spoil it YOURS Rob Rankin.

caroline
a new city centre isn't needed. what is needed is more support towards the local music scene. if we want to draw in the crowd's into coventry city centre then this is the best way to go about it. there's plenty of other great musical talents around than the enemy.

James
what a waiste all other attempts at redevelopment have been terrible leaving a patchwork city that does not work. The only way to make this work is to not allow the council anything to do with it as they have far from proved themselves.

Lucy Callender
Dont you think the money would be better spent on things that are really needed in the area like....pavement and road maintenance,Better and more efficient public transport. more and cheeper car parking Affordable housing, childrens playgrounds?? local hospitals???? schools etc.. You know Important stuff??....Do u really need to shell out millions of hard earned tax payers money to hire in a named architect for prestige to design something to replace what we allready have and is completely functional already, Is this what all the 5 pound a day Extortion parking money is being spent on?? what an utter waste of time and money and disruption to end up with something that will fuction exactly the same IE provide an area of shops and pubs and restaurants etc... as does wot we have already, A city center shopping arcade??? When Oh When is Common Sense going to Prevail??Who is in Charge of making these hairbrained and downright stupid descisions on spending such huge amounts of tax payers and people who have to park their cars to go to work??? I thort we lived in a democracy in this country and i for one dont agree that this should go ahead and huge amounts of money be spent on it. How wasteful to just knock buildings down for the sake of it especially in this current recycling and enviremental climate...not very green??Once again another waste of time idea thought up by local government ...what a supprise???

joe kerrigan
Still unfishished jobs around the city going back years !Dream on !!

Jonny
Great news. Hopefully this development will be of outstanding design & be supported publicly & financially. Time for some positivity in Coventry to take the city forward!! Let's have something to be proud of.

Jamie
Exciting... be good.

d freeman
it is nice to hear that they are going to spend all this money on the city centre, what about the outskirts of the city or dont they count.the planners have made all the roads into the city mainly for busses, if you get caught behind a bus you end up behind it all the way into the city. and the roads in coventry are rubbish you cannot go down one road which has not got pot holes, try spending some money on all the city not just the city centre

steve from spon end
we must demolish the burges, bishop st, coventry point and cathedral lanes. make broadgate the show piece it should be and the old grammer school must be restored
