Most of our native garden birds will benefit from tucking into a nutty, seedy lard-cake. They鈥檙e particularly good for the winter and this Saturday is 'feed the birds day' with the RSPB. Did you know that Feed the Birds Day is on Saturday, 27 October 2007 and there will be events taking place all over the country? This week in our Open Centre, children have been making their own bird feeders early as part of Breathing Places. 听 This can count towards your 'do one thing' for Breathing Places and is really simple, just follow the easy steps below. Step 1: What you will need: Lard, bird seed, cheese, raisins, peanuts, pine cones or a wicker ball, some string and a mixing bowl. The peanuts are optional, do not use these if you are allergic to nuts.听 Step 2: Tie a length of string to your pine cone or wicker ball. Step 3: Allow the lard to warm up to room temperature and cut into small pieces and put in a mixing bowl. Step 4: Add in the other ingredients and squash them all together until the lard binds them. Step 5: Squash the mixture into your pine cone or wicker ball and smooth over, making sure that there is plenty of lard and there are no loose pieces. Place in the fridge to cool a little. Step 6: Hang up your bird feeder in your garden, making sure it is not too close to bushes where cats can hide! Enjoy watching the birds come to your garden to feed and why not take a picture and send it into us? Don't forget to listen to Annie Othen and her team on Friday, 26 October who are out at Brandon Marsh Nature reserve from 10am - 1pm. They will be making these bird feeders too.
